The Speaker of the National Assembly Dr. Carolina Cerqueira said on April 1st, 2023, in Juba, that the 13th Ordinary Session of the Plenary Assembly of the Forum of the Parliaments of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (FP-CIRGL) provided an excellent opportunity to continue and deepen the dialogue around the urgent need for a new impetus to the multiple strands of cooperation among the states of the Great Lakes region particularly in the efforts of inter-parliamentary cooperation and parliamentary diplomacy in favour of peace, security and stability.

Dr. Carolina Cerqueira who was speaking at the closing session of the event said that there is particular concern about the situation in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, a country with which Angola shares a border of over 2,000 kilometers and whose cultural and historical ties encourage relations of friendship and solidarity, and considered that the current situation in the east of the DRC requires the promotion of dialogue and efforts towards reconciliation.

In this sense according to the President of the National Assembly the role of the Forum of Parliaments within the framework of parliamentary diplomacy should remain permanently active to promote the culture of peace, protect fundamental human rights, security and stability, to give way to prosperity, progress and development of the region.

The 13th Ordinary Session of the Plenary Assembly of the Forum of Parliaments of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region adopted, among several documents, its Plan of Action and Budget for the period 2023-2024, resolutions on the political, security and humanitarian situation in the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Republic of South Sudan and the Republic of Sudan and a resolution on Parliamentary Diplomacy for Conflict Resolution in the Great Lakes Region.

At the end of the session the President of the National Assembly Dr. Carolina Cerqueira returned to Luanda having received farewell greetings at the airport of Juba by Mr. Oyet Pierino 1st Vice President of the Legislative Assembly (parliament) of South Sudan and by the Ambassador of Angola in South Sudan with residence in Nairobi Mr. Sianga Abilio.
