The Angolan Ambassador to Kenya and Permanent Representative to the UN Offices in Nairobi, Mr. Sianga Abílio, said on 01st September 2023, that as part of the presidency of the SADC Group in Kenya, Angola will work to consolidate the Group's interests with a view to achieving common expectations.

Ambassador Sianga Abílio made these statements as he received from the Ambassador of the DRC Mr. John Nyakeru Kalunga, the gavel and other symbols of the chairmanship of the SADC Group in Kenya, a group of Ambassadors from the SADC member countries that for the next 12 months will be led by the Head of the Angolan Diplomatic Mission.

In his inaugural speech, Ambassador Sianga Abílio recalled that on 17 August 2023, when he took over the chairmanship of the SADC in Luanda, His Excellency João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, President of the Republic of Angola, stressed the importance of the region remaining united in the firm will to guarantee an environment of peace, security and stability, as fundamental factors in providing important levels of economic and social development in the Community and deepening the process of Regional Integration.

At the meeting on 01st September 2023, the first led by Ambassador Sianga Abílio, in his capacity as Chair of the SADC Group in Kenya, the Ambassadors analysed the level of preparation for the African Climate Summit, which took place in Nairobi from 4 to 6 September 2023 and was attended by more than 20 heads of state and government; discussed the results of the 19th session of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment, held from 14 to 18 August 2023 in Addis Ababa, and exchanged information on the latest developments in their respective countries.

The SADC Group in Kenya, which Ambassador Sianga Abílio will now chair for a one-year term, is made up of the diplomatic missions of Angola, South Africa, Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, DRC, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe, and meets monthly to exchange information and define common positions in the context of relations with the host country, Kenya, and with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat).
