Ambassador Sianga Abílio said, on 9 February 2024, in Nairobi that he expects SADC countries to be an active part of the sixth United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6), scheduled for 26th  February to 01st  March 2024, in Nairobi.

Ambassador Sianga Abílio made these statements while chairing the first meeting of 2024 of the Group of Ambassadors of SADC Countries accredited to Kenya, in his capacity as Chair of the SADC Group in Nairobi.

At the meeting, Ambassador Sianga Abílio reported on the latest developments in Angola with emphasis on the recent visit by Anthony Blinken, the US Secretary of State, during which the economic and strategic partnership between the Republic of Angola and the United States of America was reaffirmed with the Lobito Corridor and renewable energy projects standing out.

The SADC ambassadors in Nairobi were also informed about the results of the last Extraordinary Summit of SADC Heads of State and Government on the situation of cholera in the region, chaired by Angola on 02nd February 2024, in virtual format, and which appointed Hakainde Hichilema, President of the Republic of Zambia, as Regional Champion to lead the fight against cholera in the SADC region.

At the meeting the ambassadors agreed on positions linked to the SADC Group's participation in major multilateral events, such as the forthcoming United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6).

During the meeting the Chair of the SADC Group in Nairobi, Ambassador Sianga Abílio, guided a process to transfer the role of Treasurer of the Group from Angola to the DRC, as part of the dynamic rotation of roles within the SADC Group.
