The Ambassador of the Republic of Angola in the Republic of Kenya Engineer Sianga Abílio attended, from January 30 to February 3, 2023, in Bangkok, Thailand, a meeting of the United Nations Environment Programme-UNEP convened to address issues related to Science and Policy for the management of chemicals waste and plastics, to prevent pollution at the global level.

Ambassador Sianga Abílio was invited by the Secretariat of UNEP as Permanent Representative of the Republic of Angola to the United Nations Office in Nairobi.

Considering the historical resolution on the fight against plastic pollution approved at the fifth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-5.2), held in February 2022 in Nairobi, the participants to the Bangkok event are being sensitized on the need for an international legal agreement binding on all Member States.

At the meeting which is being held at the United Nations conference room in Bangkok, participants were told that according to scientists' estimates 8 million tonnes of plastic waste enters the oceans every year, causing damage to the Blue Economy.

The meeting which is also discussing the issue of polluting chemicals is being attended by delegations from 112 countries including politicians, scientists and experts.
